VLC 2.0 audio passthrough problem

Hi,

I just upgraded from 1.1.13 to 2.0.0 on Ubuntu 11.10 using the VLC PPA ppa:n-muench/vlc . I found everything working besides the audio passthrough to HDMI which was working before.

My settings are:
Output module: ALSA,
Use S/PDIF when available,
Device: HDA NVidia, HDMI 0 Direct hardware device without any conversions

This is what I get when running vlc -vvv:

Thanks for looking into this! I Installed both stable and master from daily build PPA and both now work for some files. For others they do not :( . I found sometimes I can get it to work by seeking forward a bit. Not sure it is related to the container format in some way. No problem with .avi files so far however mpeg program and transport streams are affected. All files play properly with sound when use of S/PDIF is disabled ...

Here is an example of a file not playing sound at start but after seeking in it:

Created Trac Ticket #6565: "not synchronized / buffer way too early -> no sound" when "use S/PDIF" is enabled.

Saw the same error messages in the Windows forum. Could it be for the same reason? It was mentioned to be related to the CPU clock there. Not overclocking mine. I will try going with a different than the default clocksource, e.g. HPET and power savings disabled.

I don't know what the problem is so I cannot say whether the same affects Windows or a different problem with similar symptoms. Personally, I cannot test and debug S/PDIF so lets hope it is the same problem, so someone else might fix it :?

Does S/PDIF work with PulseAudio or is it also broken?

Hmm, I might have found the problem and if that is the case, it was specific to ALSA. But I cannot check with real hardware.

The attempted fix is in vlc.git. But it is likely that it does not actually work. As I said, I cannot reproduce the problem, and it does not seem like anyone else cares to investigate it.

This is sad, in case it can be troubleshoot, here is my detailed configuration :

PS : SINCE I HAVE INCREASED THE CACHE-FILE PARAMETER, AT LEAST I DO NOT LOOSE THE SOUND.
HOWEVER IT HAPPENED ONLY WHEN I MOVE FORWARD OR BACKWARD INTO THE MKV FILE
TIME TO TIME BY CHANCE BY PLAYING WITH THE BACKWARD/FORWARD THING, THE SOUND COME BACK AGAIN.

Have upgraded Alsa to v1.0.25 and the result is much more better.

Although it happen still a little bit but a little step backward and foward and the sound is recovering much more easier that the previous alsa version (1.0.24).

I tried pulseaudio and vlc 2.0.1 today. I always had in mind pulseaudio in combination with passthrough was a no go. Obviously I missed something and things are a lot better today: ac3/DD audio passthrough is working fine with vlc and pulseaudio. So I can confirm the current problem must be related to ALSA somehow. I also evaluated the versions from VLC daily master and stable PPA after the change was committed to git. Unfortunately the mpeg HD streams I had audio problems with before do not play audio/video at all anymore independed of S/PDIF is enabled or not. I get messages about " ... reading ... bytes garbage ..." in the log. This probably is related to something else like demuxing. For the moment I will stick with version 2.0.1 and pulseaudio.
