Casketizer (viewtopic.php?f=14&t=92502&start=20#p307353) edited youtube.lua ; which is from http://git.videolan.org/gitweb.cgi?p=vl ... 9cdf8b5625

Casketizer's edit is working for me right now.

@c_cinq, but this is the Linux subforum, you are presenting me a Windows solution that doesn't work in Linux. Thanks anyway.

When is this gonna be fixed? I don't like to use flash to watch long YouTube videos and playlists. Thanks in advance!

@very_concerned it's lua-based solution.

@c_cinq: the luac in Linux (/usr/lib/vlc/lua/playlist/youtube.luac) is not editable as in Windows: if you try to open it there's only strange characters, nothing we can do there. And replacing your new youtube.lua for the youtube.luac I have doesn't work either.

Uh? luac bytecode is the same on Linux and Windows.

I have VLC 1.2.0 from the Nightly build (Ubuntu) and my luac can't be edited or read (it shows just random characters). The link that c_cinq gave me viewtopic.php?f=14&t=92502&start=20#p307353 is from the Windows forum where the lua file is readable and editable.

LUA files are identical on all platforms, and LUAC files are identical on Windows and Linux, and in fact on all little-endian systems.

VLC ships LUAC (bytecode) by default for better performance, but you have use LUA (source) if you prefer.

@Rémi Denis-Courmont I didn't know that. I had taken the modified (by Casketizer) youtube.lua and renamed it as youtube.luac, since that's its name in Linux. That was my error, renaming it, but now knowing what you told me I kept it as a "lua" file and it's working now.

BUT, I have another problem now: I have a slow internet connection, so I always watch my videos in 360p. So, when I open with VLC a YouTube video or create a playlist (.m3u file) with YouTube videos in it, I always add "&fmt=34" to the URL to force VLC to show me the videos in 360p resolution. And now if, for example, I try to open http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZsJx_RWXx3I and add &fmt=34 at the end, like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZsJx_RWXx3I&fmt=34 this error appears: "VLC is unable to open the MRL «http://youtube.com/get_video?video_id=Z ... vg=&fmt=34".

But if I try to open another video in 360p: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-y68iWtU49w&fmt=34 it plays Ok.

Well, thanks to you and everyone for all your help.

VLC doesn't open this URL (it's a movie uploaded by an official distributor): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PAhbcy8mP4

It doesn't even show an error message.

Because this video has restrictions about nudity and violence and requires age verification, what VLC can't do.

It would be good if VLC sent a message like: "This video requires age verification" or similar.

In theory, yes. But in practice, registering with, or logging on YouTube is going to be a problem.
