h264 via V4L2

Postby iamdrich » 16 Feb 2011 21:54

Hello, I have an h264 hardware video codec with an V4L2 driver. However, because V4L2 doesn't recognize h264 I can't play the encoded stream in VLC. So my questions are these:

1. Must I edit the V4L2 access module to add support for h264? If so can anyone point in the right direction for getting started on this.
2. Is there anyway to setup VLC so that it recognizes the h264 even if V4L2 doesn't?
3. Is there another way I'm missing? I'm looking for the easiest solution to get the h264 stream into VLC.

Thanks in advance for any and all help,
David

1. Yes. modules/access/v4l2.c
2. No idea. Try to dump to a file and feed it back to vlc?

Thanks for your response. Do you know of any "hacking" guides for the v4l2.c file? I'm not familiar with the inner workings of VLC and the code isn't exactly rich with comments. Thanks

No, I don't. Use the hacker's guide in the wiki

Support for H.264 via V4L2 is implemented in VLC 2.0.2 (already in vlc-2.0.git). Note that on the driver side, Linux kernel 3.1 or later is required.

Linux kernel 3.1 was in October 2011. So it cannot possibly have worked in February of that same year.
