vlc crashes X

Postby ReneV » 23 Oct 2010 14:04

My X server crashes when I mouse over an opened vlc window. No other program I'm using displays similar behavior, and vlc can seemingly run indefinitely, as long as I don't mouse over the window.

This happens on freshly-installed Ubuntu 10.10, using Nvidia drivers and Xinerama over 3 screens that are connected to an 8600GT and a 9500GT. The problem only happens with Xinerama turned on. I'm fairly certain it didn't happen with Ubuntu 10.04 (and Xinerama).

I've searched and found lots of Xinerama trouble but no-one has seemingly reported a complete X crash.

Anyone has any suggestions?

Look at the Xorg log and file a bug (against Xorg). There is no X server developer or tester here, so we can't help you much.

Just installed Ubuntu 10.10 and I have the same issue on maverick; I havent tested the xinerama setting yet (but it's on at the moment).
As soon as vlc starts doing something (whether it be showing a file that I started through the command line, or just hovering over it with the mouse. Activating the menu with the keyboard seems fine at a first glance, but that will also result in crashing X as soon as I select any option)

What part of the X log file should I look for here?

It looks like it has to do with the Qt interface.
A program like avidemux, which I sometimes used for converting a pvr recording (through vlc) has two entries in the repository, a Qt interface and a GTK+ interface. I installed both.
When I launch the GTK+ version, I have no problem; when I launch the Qt version, I get an X crash just like the one that vlc causes. I will look into avidemux comments and hopefully report back later.

Searching around a bit, I came across a very long thread that had the solution.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/650539
and for the most comments #124 and #127.

summation:
-It is not vlc's fault!
-It is very probably only apparent in Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick)

-you need to enable an extra repository and install a patched (repaired) version of some X packages.
And now I can go on using the still great vlc as I used to!
