Video choppy since 1.1.4

I am running VLC on a netbook-type device (Intel Atom N270, 1GB RAM, Intel 945GME, Ubuntu).
Since compiling 1.1.4 my video playback has become choppy and unwatchable. If I downgrade to 1.1.2 then everything is fine and smooth. Looking at the debug output I can see that 1.1.4 is generating a lot of this type of error message:
The output of 1.1.2 does not have any of these error messages. Also, the CPU usage of X jumps up from 6% to 30% in 1.1.4.
I have captured the debug output of VLC in both conditions and filed a bug report with the debug files attached: http://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/4203
Does anyone else experience a similar problem with 1.1.4?
