Ubutu VLC 1.0.2 segmentation fault on launch?

Hi,
I just installed VLC 1.0.2 with Synaptic on Ubuntu 9.10/64 and I get a segmentation fault on launch. See vlc -v2 output below. I am trying to watch a WVC1 file in an MKV container. The VLC 0.9.9a Grishenko version plays it at ~2 frames per second full screen at 2560x1600 res and with no sound.

I am sure I have more than enough hardware to play it: Core 2 quad, 2.84 ghz, 12 mb L2, ATI radeon 4850/512 with ATI proprietary driver 10-5-x86.x86_64 installed, 4 gb ddr3, cas 7-7-7-20 and a Velociraptor hard drive.

I tried to compile the 1.0.6 version from source and hit a compiler error (driver problem?):

What is the simplest solution to view this video?

VLC 1.0.2 is not supported (because it is buggy). Please update to VLC 1.0.6.
