Subtitles cause VLC to crash

VLC tends to crash whenever I want to apply a subtitle to a video file. Note that it doesn't crash before the subtitles appear. What happens is that I drag a subtitle file onto the video window, it plays through the opening credits, and when the subtitles are supposed to appear, the image freezes, and the sound starts to become more and more choppy before it freezes completely.

Has anybody had a similar problem?


Also, I have to open a video file twice in order to see the video. I open the file once, and I get the sound, but no picture, I open it again, and then I get both the picture and the sound. Then I close the first window, and the video runs as normal in the second window. It's sort of become a temporary solution that I've learned to live with...

yeah mine too.
but on my system it will suddenly close when loading MKV subtitle.
using vlc 1.0.6-9.1 on opensuse 11.2x64.

Do you have the libass module?
yes.(libass3 0.9.6-2.14 and libass4 0.9.7-3.2)it is automatically installed as part of dependencies on software manager.

how do we know if it is loaded or not?
and how to load it?
