Can't install vlc for ubuntu

Hi,
I'm new to linux and have been trying to install vlc on ubuntu karmic koala 9.10
When i try to run it from the command line i get:

Package vlc is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package vlc has no installation candidate

I cannot find it under synaptic either.

Could anyone give me any help?

Please not that I am very new to linux, so if any suggestions could be broken down as simply as possible I would be very grateful.

Thank you

Make sure the universe repository is included in your apt config file. VLC is definitely available on ubuntu (see http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic/vlc). For the apt thing, have a look at this page: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/Ubuntu.

I've also tried Ubuntu and it was very hard for me to install VLC with all the commands.
Maybe Ubuntu is different but I went to - Application - Software center - search VLC and press install. No need for any commands

If you want to install then you need to make sure that you have a “universe” mirror in your /etc/apt/sources.list

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install vlc vlc-plugin-esd.

This will complete the installation.

If you want to open VLC You need to go to Applications--->Sound&Video--->VLC Media Player.

You must edit the file
/etc/apt/sources.list

and make sure the lines that say "universe" aren't commented.

But I have the universe repositories:

deb htt p: //security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu karmic-security main restricted
deb-src htt p: //security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu karmic-security main restricted
deb htt p: //security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu karmic-security universe
deb-src htt p: //security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu karmic-security universe
deb ht tp: //security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu karmic-security multiverse
deb-src htt p: //security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu karmic-security multiverse

deb ht tp: //us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy universe
deb-src ht tp: //us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy universe
deb h ttp:/ /us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy-updates universe
deb-src htt p:/ /us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy-updates universe

deb ht t p://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy multiverse
deb-src htt p://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy multiverse
deb htt p ://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy-updates multiverse
deb-src h ttp://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy-updates multiverse

and my Ubuntu apt-get says:

$> sudo apt-get install vlc vlc-plugin-pulse mozilla-plugin-vlc

Selecting previously deselected package vlc.
(Reading database ... 120356 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking vlc (from .../vlc_1.0.3-1~ppa1_i386.deb) ...

So, it only installs version 1.0.3-1 :

$> dpkg -l | grep vlc

ii vlc-nox 1.0.3-1~ppa1 multimedia player and streamer (without X su
ii vlc-plugin-pulse 1.0.3-1~ppa1 PulseAudio plugin for VLC

How can I force the installation of VLC 1.1 ?
Thanks

You have the universe repositories indeed. But they're configured to hardy instead of karmic...

VLC 1.1.0 is in Ubuntu Maverick already.
