Hi, I'm a newbie with Linux and cannot get my vlc installation to run. I just installed the vlc 1.0.5 with the 1-click install, but the player is not starting.

I think I have all necessary codecs and other stuff since xine is playing the dvd without any problem, but VLC does not react at all. Can anyone help me?

Are you trying to run it as root? Because you can't, at least not on Opensuse.

Try starting vlc from a console:
vlc -vvv

Hi, I uninstalled and reinstalled VLC with the network cable connected to the internet and then it worked.
