How to access DVB channels list with the remote?

I recently switched from analog to DVB-C, and now I use VLC instead of Tvtime. Everything works just fine, but there's a functionality that I miss: go to a channel by punching its number on the remote.
I don't know how to do that. Tvtime could go to an entry in its channel list when I was pressing a number on the remote, but can VLC do this? And how?
I've set up Lirc to zap up and down, but that's not an option if I want to get to channel 50 (out of 100), especially since it takes around 1 second to switch.
I'm using VLC 1.0.5-1~getdeb1 (from getdeb) on Ubuntu Karmic 64-bit.

Can I bump this?

My question was, how can I access playlist entries using lirc and the remote control numbers (that is, typing 1 5 on my remote to go to the 15th entry, not by zapping up/down). I know how to setup .lircrc, I just don't know what commands that VLC uses to control the playlist via lirc...

I have the same problem...
i do assign a single channel to view in to my string:

vlc -vvv /root/channels.conf XXXXXXX --sout '#transcode{vcodec=DIV3,vb=1024,scale=1,acodec=mp3,ab=192,channels=2}:std{access=mmsh,mux=asfh,dst=:8080}}' --ttl 12
