video scrunched and black & White

okay I'm running ubuntu 9.10 and Vlc Player 1.0.4 goldeneye and the video is all scrunched up to the left side and black and white. could someone please help me fix this

vlc --reset-config

If that does not work, you officially have a broken XVideo driver Then you should try

vlc -V x11

but it will eat your CPU.
