unable to play a avi file

MY OS : DEBIAN LENNY 5.0.3.

I have been trying to play an avi file, but vlc is showing the following error :

no suitable decoder module for fourcc `XVID'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.

no ffmpeg module listed. Which point to a broken install

Remove any un-official repo from your apt/sources.list (and yes debian-multimedia.org is not an official repo)
apt-get update
remove libavutil* and libavcodec* (this will force the removal of vlc)
reinstall vlc

xtophe, I realised about non-official packages and removed all of them and reinstalled the vlc.
I am yet to again run the files and let you know my situation.
Is it okay, I have installed openoffice package from lenny backport. Just let me know your opinion.
