VLC 1.1.0-git starts screensaver after video playback stops

it starts screensaver after video playback stops in KDE 4.4 RC1. I've found no setting that has any effect on it. Anyone else has anything like this?

VLC stops inhibiting the screensaver, which is not the same as enabling it.

I guess it's a matter of interpretation from the screensaver side whether "resuming" resets the screensaver timeout or not. But I suspect the KDE interpretation is wrong, or perhaps xdg-screensaver is not using the KDE screensaver interface correctly.

I too experience screensaver issues on Ubuntu 9.10 with todays nightly (it's the first of the 1.10-branch I've tried): VLC doesn't seem to inhibit the screensaver whereas 1.0.4 works as it should. Any ideas? I know it could be nothing being a product of ongoing development but I wanted to mention it nonetheless.

Sounds like you did not install xdg-screensaver.

xdg-screensaver (part of xdg-utils in Ubuntu 9.10) is installed (ver. 1.0.2-6.1). I don't seem to be able to find a corresponding -dev package, though - but I didn't get any errors regarding XDG during ./configure so I don't think that matters.

Then either xdg-screensaver is buggy, or GNOME is. (I'd bet on the latter looking at Launchpad bug reports)

No, VLC is inhibiting the screensaver as long as the video plays, no matter how long it is. I can watch a 2 hour long movie without problems. But when it stops (either because EOF or manual stop) the screensaver starts. This is independent from the length of the video, if it ends after 5 secs the screensaver will start despite that my timeout is set to 10 minutes. It's probably an xdg-utils or vlc issue as far as I can tell. I wouldn't think that both GNOME and KDE4.4 implementation could be wrong.

That sounds like a bug in xdg-screensaver then

That's right, this is a bug in xdg-screensaver, see http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26085.
The bug is fixed in the CVS of xdg-utils.

Still, it looks like I can't inhibit the screensaver with xdg-screensaver on my KDE box (see the above bug report).

Before running xdg-screensaver you should be check — need do it or not? For example, I added this command in to autorun "xset dpms 0 0 0 s noblank s noexpose s 0 0", so my screen saver is completely disabled, and there is no need to run stoppers.

P.S. To solve this problem, I had to run "sudo chmod -x /usr/bin/xdg-screensaver" :)
