Scrunched video, no color running on debian

I have vlc 1.0.3 on a debian testing machine, amd 64. I have an issue where videos are 'scrunched' to the left 1/4 of the screen, and there is no color. This link appears to be the same issue a few months ago:

And here is a more recent report of a similar problem:

Are there some configuration settings that I can check on my specific system to determine the cause of this issue?
Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

Looks like your XVideo driver is broken. Switch to X11 or OpenGL in the video preferences.

I am having the same issue in Super OS 9.10. I am not sure what may have updated to screw things up other than xrunner. switching to X11 or OpenGL didn't help me. Has the same problem there.

Check if you don't have unofficial libav* package . In particular if you have libavutil50

well, since I posted I had reinstalled Super OS 9.10. what's installed there is libavutil49 and vlc works fine once I reinstalled. I maybe I had 50, just not sure. if I hadn't reinstalled and did have libavutil50, what would I have had to do to "downgrade"?
