VLC won't open

I have vlc version 1.0.2, and it just suddenly stopped working. It has been working fine up until today, but for no reason it has stopped. If I try to open it from the menu, nothing happens. If I click on a movie, the movie plays, but there are no controllers or menus. When I run it from the command line I get the following output:

Code: Select all

VLC media player 1.0.2 Goldeneye [0x14c6f98] main interface: creating httpd [0x14c6f98] main interface error: socket bind error (Permission denied) [0x14c6f98] main interface error: socket bind error (Permission denied) [0x14c6f98] main interface error: cannot create socket(s) for HTTP host [0x14c6f98] http interface error: cannot listen on :8080 [0x14c6f98] main interface error: no suitable interface module [0x13b9888] main libvlc error: interface "http, none" initialization failed [0x14d0a58] main interface: creating httpd [0x14d0a58] main interface error: socket bind error (Permission denied) [0x14d0a58] main interface error: socket bind error (Permission denied) [0x14d0a58] main interface error: cannot create socket(s) for HTTP host [0x14d0a58] http interface error: cannot listen on :8080 [0x14d0a58] main interface error: no suitable interface module [0x13b9888] main libvlc error: interface "default" initialization failed
I tried uninstaling it and reinstalling it, but that didn't help. Any other ideas? Thanks

Sorry, I think I figured out what might have caused the error although I don't know how to fix it. I was following this guide to try to get global hotkeys to work for my keyboard:

http://kollerat.com/cms/index.php/Allge ... Linux.html

I tried uninstalling xbindkeys, but that didn't help. Any other ideas as how to fix this? I would guess that I need to change the "interface module" to something other than http, but i dont know how to do this since i cant get it to open

In a terminal

Code: Select all

vlc --reset-config

Actually, that didn't fully fix the problem. I run the "--reset-config", and reset the preferences, and it works fine for a while. But as soon as i reboot my computer, the same thing happens again and i have to re-reset the settings. How do i change it so that it boots with the default settings? Thanks

Something is repeatedly corrupting your configuration file.

Is there some way that I can fix this?

Does anyone know how i can fix this issue? Worst case I can tell it to run "vlc --reset-config" on startup, but that doesn't really fix the issue, it just patches over it

Something runs the VLC engine and overrides the configuration. Either you have some scripts, some broken LibVLC-based application, or some broken VLC shortcut icon.

hi,
I tried to download the handbrake application for mac os x. when i tried to do this it said that i needed a 64-bit vlc player and so i downloaded this 64bit vlc player. then i tried to open my vlc player to watch a film which i had previously downloaded and it wont work. i get as far as opening the file in vlc but the film screen does not appear. i tried to reset preferences but it hasnt seemed to work. ive tried deleting vlc to my trash and emptying trash numerous times and none of this has helped.
does anyone have any ideas?
if so could you please talk me through a step by step guide as im desperate to get my vlc working again.

Thanks,

Paddy
