Modifying ts.c

Hi,

I was have been trying to make specific modifications to VLC via ts.c under /modules/demux. I have so far been unable to make the changes actually show up after compilation. I was wondering if someone could tell me, preferably step-by-step, how to modify ts.c and rebuild the plugin for that file, so that the changes are reflected in the final build of the program. I have read the HACKING file but am having trouble relating that to my problem.
