No VLC 1.0.0 for RHEL 5.x/CentOS 5.x due to QT 4.3

Dear Developers,

According to a posting by Dag Wieers over on users@lists.rpmforge.net:
But I just looked closer to why it complained and tried to work around it, however it seems vlc 1.0.0 needs QT 4.3, and RHEL5 only ships with QT 4.2.
So I can officially say that vlc 1.0.0 will be out of the picture unless the videolan project brings down their requirements, or until RHEL6 ships.
Is it possible for you to relax your requirements down to QT 4.2? I would really like to be able to use 1.0.0. RHEL6 is a long, long ways away.

Many thanks,
-T

No. Sorry.

Use a less stupid distribution or stay with 0.9.9

No. Sorry.
Will you consider it for 1.0.1?

No. Qt4.2 lacks a blocking queue for signals.

Not to ask too stupid a question, but is there a way to work around this problem?

Will the Windows version of 1.0.0 work in Wine?

Well you can make a static build of qt4 for vlc if you build it yourself, but i don't know if it's the best solution.
Thats how alienbob solved it for slackware 12.2 that doesn't include qt4.
You can check his vlc.SlackBuild for ideas http://slackware.org.uk/people/alien/sl ... vlc/build/

Note that it remains possible to have vlc 1.0.0 if the target isn't "desktop" multimedia player.
vlc 1.0.0 on RHEL/CentOS5 can be totally suitable for server usage, which also fit the primary aim of this distribution.
(understand, without qt at all).

Fedora has other difficulties compared to RHEL/Centos5 for "industrial range" desktop usage, but are NOT that insurmountable!
(And I wouldn't use anything bellow Fedora11 for that purpose).

Now If you really want to mix the stability of oldish RHEL/Centos5 things and the freshly new improvements that can be seen on brighness Fedora , (without having orage). I would suggest to install F-11 on a chroot, and use vlc-1.0.0 that way.

I sent this link over to users@lists.rpmforge.net. Thank you.

I also got VLC 1.0.0 for Windows working under WINE 1.1.23. It give a loud screech at you when it starts, but otherwise seems to run fine.

Would you guys add to your wish list for 1.0.2 a way around the qt 4 problem in Linux?

Many thanks,
-T

Unless I paid to, I will not work on it.
