Glitchy audio with 0.9.8a on PPC

I was getting glitchy audio from the VLC which installed through the GUI from Ubuntu (8.0.4 on PPC G4 867MHz Powerbook), so I compiled 0.9.8a without any problems
% vlc -v
VLC media player 0.9.8a Grishenko
[00000001] main libvlc debug: VLC media player - version 0.9.8a Grishenko - (c) 1996-2008 the VideoLAN team
[00000001] main libvlc debug: libvlc was configured with ./configure '--disable-live555'
However, I still get the glitchy audio playback. There are occasional crackles and very very short gaps in the sound.
It goes without saying that I tried all the relevant audio driver output modules (alsa and oss are semi functional). It also doesn't seem to matter what the input source is (MP3 or WAV both give the problem). I also ran strace to see if system calls were interrupting playback but that didn't show up anything.
Does anyone else get this?
cheers,
Bob.
