How do I get the latest FFMPEG library and tell VLC to use it?

You download FFMPEG, build it, then you do the same with VLC.

Cryptic. But then, I really didn't give you enough information. I've been using xubuntu for a few months and am a linux beginner. The FFMPEG website hinted that some support for Real Audio/Media had been added to their December release. My hope was that I could download the FFMPEG library, then use use some VLC option to inform VLC of its presence. I've never "built" anything, and wouldn't know how to begin. If that is my only option, then I will attempt it in the future when I have more knowledge of linux.
Merci
