VLC refuses to play/crashes with MP4 video on Mandriva 2009

I'm having a bit of a problem with VLC since I upgraded Mandriva 2008.1 Free (Spring) to 2009 Free.
Back on the 'old' system, I was able to have VLC play the .mp4 files that come from my portable MP4 player, however now it will not.
When I try to play such a file with VLC, I briefly see it's interface appear on screen along with the 'privacy' dialog, then it all just vanishes again.

I'll try to be as complete as possible, if I forget anything important please tell me:

System hardware is a hp Compaq nc6320 business notebook, containing an Intel Centrino processor at 1.73Ghz, 2GB RAM, Intel 915GM (shared, 128MB) Video chipset.

Operating system: (upgraded from 2008.1) Mandriva 2009
Environment: KDE 3.5.10, Pulse Audio 0.9.10, Compiz-fusion enabled in defaults, ffmpeg/libffmpeg 0.4.9, VLC version 0.9.8a Grishenko

I have already tried if removing the VLC settings/preferences directory held a solution, it did not.
This directory was empty to start with as I installed VLC after the upgrade to Mandriva 2009 from a clean install of 2008.1; and it also seems VLC can't even remember it's own settings? I have to set equalizer per-song, for example, switching songs and it is gone again.

As per your suggestion I have specifically changed VLC's default setting of video from 'default' (VLC determines automatically) to 'X11 Video'.
Compiz-fusion is still enabled (As a side note, Compiz was not a problem under Mandriva 2008.1).

VLC now no longer crashes, and the video plays. However:

1. No sound.
2. the 'Errors' window displays the following message:

No suitable decoder module: VLC does not support the audio or video format "mp4a". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this.

I find this strange.. because this used to work.
Because it used to work, there should also be a way to fix it. But how is the question?
What package holds the 'mp4a' codec? (I should already have it installed as far as I know, but wish to confirm this)

Sorry, if you don't have faad module in vlc --list or in the plugins list in the interface, then it wasn't correctly compiled.

Just read this by accident:

vlc --list | grep faad

As far as I know, vlc sends its output to stderr (at least on my 1.0.0 version on Ubuntu 9.10), which is why simply piping the output to grep will not work, as the user experienced:
