playing *.ape fyles

Hi all: I'm from Spain and my native language is not English, so excuse my lack of accuracy.

(I'm using Linux Mint 5 Elyssa -KDE4)
I have been looking for a media player to play *.ape files.
Every where I looked they say VLC can play ape files.
I (synaptic) have installed the latest version of VLC 0.9.3, but It can't play my ape files. :-|
When I open the folder, in which there are the ape files, it doesn't show them (I have to choose to "show all files" to see them.
Even if i try to open the file (cliking right buttom over the file -->"open with" -->VLC) the media players opens but it doesn't run.

Do I need a pluging?,
Am I doing something wrong?.

some help, please?

Hi Neko2, thank you for answering.

libavcodec 3:0.cvs.20070307-5ubuntu-7.1+medibuntu1
(same for libacodec-dev)

I guess it is from 2007 year but it says it is the latest version.

That is too old, as .ape was only added in the last year or so. You should use something from 2008 at least.

Linux Mint 6 will be out soon, maybe you want to try the beta?

I think I should wait. Anyway I'm updating as soon as the system ask me to do it. They say the new version will be release in a few days.

On the other hand I can run the ape files at just another pc running winxp, I have in another room. Only I have to load the files in the pen drive memory.

Thank you anyway Neko.
