Problems with openSUSE 10.3

Postby a-----g » 09 Oct 2008 10:31

I have updated VLC player from version 0.8.something to 0.9.4, using the standard YaST procedure.
Previously it worked perfectly well, now it doesn't work at all.
On some files it just crashes, and I see in /var/log/messages file a message: "vlc[4575]: segfault at 00002af000000013 rip 00002af0db7120b3 rsp 000000004700c9b0 error 6"
On other files I receive an error message:
"No suitable decoder module:
VLC does not support the audio or video format "WMV3". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this."

The "audio or video format" may change from file to file, but the result is always the same - doesn't work.

I like VLC very much, and am really sorry I cannot use it now.
I would appreciate any help and advice.

Well ... Apparently there is some mistake in rpm command line options.
But if we execute: rpm -q "vlc" "libav"
we get:
vlc-0.9.4-4.1
package libav is not installed

What libav package is ?
I thought YaST has to install whatever libraries are needed.

Hi,

I have the same problem (suse 10.3). Sometimes vlc just seg fault even when playing a clip that worked before. The crashes seem to be more frequent when it auto-loads any subtitle files but it also happens without subtitles.

My rpm command output:

libavc1394-0-0.5.3-64
libavformat52-0.4.9.15594svn-20081010.pm.2143
vlc-qt-0.9.4-0.pm.2
vlc-0.9.4-0.pm.2
libavcodec51-0.4.9svn-20080906.pm.0
libavutil49-0.4.9.15594svn-20081010.pm.2143
libavdevice52-0.4.9.15594svn-20081010.pm.2143
libavfilter0-0.4.9.15590-1.1
libavcodec52-0.4.9.15594svn-20081010.pm.2143
vlc-noX-0.9.4-0.pm.2

I got the packages from packman's repository.
I also managed to generated a core file, with the following backtrace:

(gdb) backtrace

Can this be a problem in libc ?
thanks
Simon

Hi, everyone !
Since it was me who started this thread, I shall post here the solution in hope it might be helpful for someone.
VLC stopped playing due to missing and outdated shared libraries. Apparently, SuSE YaST did not trace all the dependencies needed for VLC update.
Download VLC code, and try to compile it.
There are 2 steps to perform:
1) ./configure [try "vlc --help" in order to see all the flags one needs to put after the "./configure"]
2) make
This will not work immediately. At each failure, you will have to install missing (or outdated) shared libraries.
When everything is installed, and you have succeeded to compile VLC, you won't need to compile VLC any more (sound silly, but it is so).
The installed-from-the-internet VLC will work now, because you provided it with all the shared libraries it needs. So the compilation is only a way to see what is missing.
That's all.

Hello

Same problem with VLC 0.9.6

Uninstall VLC 0.9.nnn et install VLC 1.0.0-beta (and depedencies) on OS 10.3.

It works perfectly

friendly yours
