Strange problem with greek autodetect subtitles

I have a rather strange problem with vlc

When i have on the same folder a .avi and a .srt and the subtitles are in english it auto loads the subtitles correctly.

When the .srt is in greek (not the filename just the subtitle language) it doesn't load them  and if i do it manually (open file  use subtitle) it loads them ok

Now the most strange thing

When i run vlc from the terminal with a command something like that

vlc '/home/animae/Desktop/Black Books/season 2/2x1 The Entertainer.avi'

it autoloads the greek subtitles !!!

The same problem i had and when i installed vlc from the ubuntu repositories and now that i have compiled vlc 0.9.3 from the source code...

Before i had Kubuntu and i didn't had any problem so maybe it's something to do with gnome

i use ubuntu 8.04 and vlc 0.9.3

You need to start vlc from a terminal with -vvv and compare the logs between the various tries you made.

But ihave to say it's strange it works from command line and not from the gui

First of all thank you for the answer
But if i open the vlc from the terminal how can i check what's going on when my problem is when i open the vlc strait with one click from the gui??I mean ok i open it from the terminal and then i go to the folder i click the episode and it opens on another vlc without "bothering" the "terminal" vlc. sorry for being so ignorant

Ok i just solved it.I don't know exactly why now it works but here is what i did

I went to a avi file and i right clicked it then properties from the window that appears i choose the "open with" tab.And as an application to run i choose add.DON'T add the vlc it already has BUT "use a custom command " and then wright "vlc" .I really reaaaally don't know why this thing worked but it worked. If anyone has any idea why (even though i doubt ) please post it
