When i finish installing vlc ,i run it . There is nothing except error: usr/local/lib/libavcodec.so.51 :undefined reference to `av_realloc'

god who can tell me the reason

problem with system ffmpeg headers versus your in-tree headers for ffmpeg i would say

Which linux distribution are you using ?
How did you install VLC ?

from the very little information you provided it's a bug in the ffmpeg package you use.

The kernel i used is 2.6.15 ，it is compiled on Fedora core 4 .

vlc 0.8.5 ：
./configure --enable-x11 --enable-xvideo --disable-gtk --enable-sdl --enable-ffmpeg --with-ffmpeg-mp3lame --enable-mad --enable-libdvbpsi --enable-a52 --enable-dts --enable-libmpeg2 --enable-dvdnav --enable-faad --enable-vorbis --enable-ogg --enable-theora --enable-faac --enable-mkv --enable-freetype --enable-fribidi --enable-speex --enable-flac --enable-livedotcom --enable-caca --disable-skins --disable-skins2 --disable-kde --disable-qt --enable-wxwidgets --disable-ncurses --enable-debug

The process has no error , when i run ./vlc and the error will appear

You should really avoid to use Fedora Core 4. This is really unsupported version.

it would really better to "re-install" a newer version (Fedora 8 or 9)

i suggest you use fedora 8 and when you configure ffmpeg ,you should add --prefix=/usr
