ID tags, not file name, in the playlist?

When I play audio files in VLC, running on Ubuntu 7.10, I can only get the path of file/file name to show up in the playlist. How can I get it to use ID tags instead?

What audio format are you playing? VLC supports ID3v1 and ID3v2 (presumably up to ID3v2.3 - not sure about 2.4) used in MP3 files, as well as Vorbis comments used in Ogg and FLAC files.

I have tried with Mp3, taged with both ID3v1 and ID3v2, and WMA lossless (which I can't even get sound with).I have tried with Mp3, taged with both ID3v1 and ID3v2, and WMA lossless (which I can't even get sound with).

OK - I see what you mean. The current wxWidgets playlist only displays the file name (minus the extension). You could try the latest nighly build from:
http://nightlies.videolan.org/

Which has an improved playlist window (using the new default Qt4 interface) which displays the playlist in columns including Title and Artist.

WMA lossless only plays back on Windows since VLC uses Microsoft DLLs to decode the format.

Thanks for the quick reply :)

That sounds good. Which version should I use for Ubuntu 7.10?

And does it include support for cover art (folder.jpg i the folder where you have the music file)?

When can I expect this in the stable version of vlc?

Hmmm... And there is no workaround for this. I have 350 GB of music stored in WMA lossless?

The Debian Sid I386 (unstable) repository should work fine with 7.10.

There is album art support - however as far as I know VLC (if it is allowed) downloads album/artist information from the net automatically.

An alpha release of VLC 0.9.0 is meant to be due soon. There is no release date yet as far as I know.

I do not know of a workaround for WMA lossless on *nix. It is possible that e.g. VLC with Wine could work (but that method is rather crude regardless).
