Open the PulseAudio Volume Control (Applications > Sound & Video > PulseAudio Volume Control) and look for anything unusual.

It's not pulseaudio b/c banshee plays mp3s and videos and I can hear everything except for VLC... I think there "might" be a missing plugin or something...

You probably need to remove your default profile to uses ESoundD layer configured by default with vlc for F-8 by livna...
rpm -rf ~/.vlc

I have EXACTLY your same problem. Did you solve it in any way ????
My audio card is an Intel 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller
In other forums I saw other people with just this problem, but I didn't find any valid solution.
Please help.
Ciao

To solve this problem I tried to install a lot of audio related packages and finally I got vlc functioning
The last one made the difference:
alsa-plugins-pulseaudio.x86_64 1.0.14-5.fc8
but of course I don't know if any of previous installations was useful too.

you will need also pulseaudio-esound-compat for vlc...
This package is installed by default on a fresh install... you should install it manually if you uses pulseaudio and vlc from a yum upgrade to F8

I lost my sound in Vlc when i disabled Pulse audio. The reason i did that is because pulse audio was overloading my speakers on my laptop, is there a way to get audio without having Pulse enabled? Thanks

You can pick any other output method (like ALSA instead of EsounD for example)
Go to:
Preferences -> Audio -> Output Module -> tick Advanced -> Choose Alsa output -> Save and start again vlc
