How do I play a DVD with Ubuntu Gutsy?

Postby jester805 » 20 Oct 2007 02:26

I just installed Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) on a partition on my hard drive. I have VLC installed and tried to play a DVD movie. VLC loads up just fine, when I choose File --> Open Disc, the Open dialog box pops up (and I hit OK), but nothing happens. Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?

My machine is an Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 with 2 gig's of RAM and an nVidia 7800GT video card.

Thanks in advance.

May be you need to specify the device of your dvd drive in the box below: dvd:// => dvd:/dev/hda or similar (with /dev/hdb, /dev/sdb etc.). I think if you put nothing vlc looks for /dev/dvd which should be a symbolic link to your dvd drive but probably you don't have this link.

Sorry, I should have specified that. It reads: dvd:///dev/scd0 in that box now.
