Firefox doesn't identify vlc-mozillaplugin-OpenSuSE 10.2 (64

Postby paco » 01 Sep 2007 20:33

Dear forum members,

I have installed vlc (Version 0.8.6c-0.pm.2) and vlc-mozillaplugin (also Version 0.8.6c-0.pm.2) on my openSuSE 10.2 (64 bit) system. I am using Mozilla Firefox Version 2.0.0.5.

I installed the two vlc-packages with my YaST2-package-manager and everything seemed to work out fine, that is to say that I had no error messages.

Unfortunately, when trying to watch online streams with firefox, it does not work. The website which offers the streams does not find the VLC video-plugin.

Checking the .mozilla-folder under my home-directory I found the pluginreg.dat-file, in which the plugins which have been identified by firefox are listed. The content of the pluginreg.dat is at follows:

-------------------------------------------------
Generated File. Do not edit.

[PLUGINS]
/usr/lib/browser-plugins/libflashplayer.so:$

-------------------------------------------------

Checking the above indicated folder /usr/lib/browser-plugins/ I found the plugins. The content of the folder is as follows:

-------------------------------------------------
flashplayer.xpt
libflashplayer.so
nphelix.so
nphelix.xpt
-------------------------------------------------

Then I have searched my system and have found that the vlc mozillaplugin is stored under /usr/lib64/browser-plugins:

-------------------------------------------------
libvlcplugin.so
-------------------------------------------------

Thus, I think that firefox does not find the vlc mozillaplugin because it does only search unter /usr/lib/browser-plugins and not also unter /usr/lib64/browser-plugins?

I have already copied the libvlcplugin.so-file from /usr/lib64/browser-plugins to /usr/lib/browser-plugins but that did not change anything.

Can anybody help? Your help is very much appreciated.

Well, there comes a problem of the 32bit Firefox on a 64bit machine.

Either you have to:
- use the 32bit version of vlc (I never tried that actually)
- use a 64bit version of Firefox. You'll run in other problems though, basically Java and Flash (flash works good with the nspluginwrapper, never tried java though)
