Can someone help me with this please? I have the Smart package manager installed, but I can't figure out how to install VLC with it. I tried "smart install VLC", but it didn't work. Smart won't update, either.

I'm not sure if I have to have an rpm in my directory or not. Doesn't smart just go out and find what you want it to install, like in gentoo? I have a vlc rpm on my desktop, but Smart won't install that one, either.
linux-ishh:/home/user/Desktop/vlc # smart install vlc-0.8.6b-0.pm.0.x86_64.rpm

Can you tell us which distribution do you uses?

You should often install third part repository to install vlc (at least on fedora). And not uses package that are not targetted to your distribution...

well, according the file you try to install, you seem to have downloaded that one from the PackMan repository, and I'd imply you use a SUSE/openSUSE distribution then.

Is SMART mandatory for you?

Alternatively, try following the information on: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-suse.html
