Cannot install vlc in Debian

Postby jamajano » 10 May 2007 17:05

I cannot install vlc in my Debian sarge.
My sources.list file looks like:
..
deb http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/debian sarge main
deb-src http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/debian sarge main
..
when I try to install vlc I get the following error:
> apt-get update
> apt-get install vlc
reading list of packets... Done
creating dependencies tree... Done
Re: cannot find packet vlc
>
Please, any idea of the problem.

Oke, still haven't got it working yet.
But found out that sarge isn't supported because it isn't stable ?

sarge is the old debian stable.
Etch is the new debian stable that you should use and a fairly recent VLC is packaged in it without need to add extra repository.

I cannot install vlc in my Debian sarge.

Thanks xtophe, but I think I need more info.
What is the line we should add to sources.list file in order to install vlc?

I have added
deb http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/debian etch main

and I get an error because the apt-get cannot find it.

Please, can you help in it?

You don't need to add anything in your sources.list

I'm using debian sarge, which is listed as a supported (or at least available) platform on http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-debian.html.

Vlc is not installed on my system and "apt-get install vlc" fails as such:

Code: Select all

Reading Package Lists... Done Building Dependency Tree... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that the package is simply not installable and a bug report against that package should be filed. The following information may help to resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies: vlc: Depends: libgtk2.0-0 (>= 2.8.0) but 2.6.4-3.1 is to be installed Depends: libice6 (>= 1:1.0.0) but 4.3.0.dfsg.1-14sarge1 is to be installed Depends: libnotify1 but it is not going to be installed Depends: libwxgtk2.6-0 (>= 2.6.3.2.1.5) but it is not going to be installed Depends: libxfixes3 (>= 1:4.0.1) but it is not going to be installed Depends: libxinerama1 but it is not going to be installed Depends: libxosd2 (>= 2.2.13) but it is not going to be installed Depends: libxxf86vm1 but it is not going to be installed E: Broken packages
I'd just like to be able to use the vlc media player without having to go through the expense of upgrading the entire system. Is this possible? If not, can someone recommend another media player that is supported on debian sarge?

Thanks,
Derek

Xtophe,

I followed the instructions at http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-debian.html to install VLC on sarge but it doesn't work as I've posted previously. Is that information no longer correct?

Well, I hate for my first post to be the last BUT...... I run sidux and have the same problem. I see no indication that the developers have any interest in vlc running on lenny or sid. You will note in this thread zero info or feedback from the developers. All you have to say guys is "I haven't a clue" or "we're too busy", or "the dog ate it". Thank you for your kind attention.

vlc does run on lenny and sid. could you clarify your assertion?

And most developpers are running sid or lenny.
