I had to add extra repositories to get VLC working.
Visit http://en.opensuse.org/YaST_package_repository to get a list of the recommneded ones - including videolan itself and also guru. I needed both.

to add them go to yast and add installation sources, copying the addresses from the website

go to - yast (root password needed)
select - installation source
select - add
copy the address for the guru and videolan repositories, as well as any other you fancy from that list

(- esp packman.unixheads.com/suse/10.2 - becuase that one will get rid of the old crippled xine you probably got in your opensuse 10.2. Dont think this matters for vlc but I'm not 100% sure so do it anyway)

you can paste the whole address in as an http - but you do not need the http:// part in the addresses because yast already knows that and gets confused if you put it in

after you finish you may well get warnings to update (orange in the task bar) - accept those.

you can then add vlc and its dependencies from - software management - also in yast

hopefully vlc will than install fine!

looks like you are not downloading using the repository?
or maybe ypu have a half installed vlc from a previous attempt
or possibly there is a temporary fault at the respository

try uninstalling any vlc you may already have and trying again - after you add the repositories I mentioned

by the way, it might be better not to use the packman respository after all.
this is because the libmpeg2 file in packman seems to crash vlc whe you play DVDs
better use guru instead

linux-dvd

The exact instructions what you need to do (no GURU repository needed, no PackMan needed.. just the project's own VLC Repo), can be found at:
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-suse.html

@linux-dvd:

follow the instructions on: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-suse.html

You start YaST2, Add installation sources, you enter the URL to the VLC repository click OK and then you can select VLC in Yast2 Software Management.

First, add a new repository (installation source) in YaST (YaST2 -> Software -> Installation Sources)

Add the following Repository:

Type: HTTP / Servername: download.videolan.org /
Directory: /pub/videolan/vlc/SuSE/<SUSE Version>

Replace <SUSE Version> in the Directory above with your installed SuSE Version. Supported at this time are :

9.3
10.0
10.1
10.2

Confirm the addition.

The repository is signed with a GPG Key (gpg key C8DA93D2 fingerprint BC8D 780D E330 8581 B2E0 7085 33DE 8FB7 C8DA 93D2). Accept this key in YaST and it will warn you in case there is something suspect with the repository.
Accept everything by clicking Finish.

Go to Software Management and enter VLC in the searchbox and search for it. Select it and click Accept to install it with all it's dependencies. This might require the SUSE CD or DVD.

If you want the vlc Mozilla Plugin, you have to select the vlc-mozillaplugin manually. It does not get installed by dependencies.

You're done with the installation. Have a lot of Fun.
