Hi,
I am new to Ubuntu and having problem installing VLC Player. My system is Ubuntu Linux Desktop Linux x86 32 bit version 6.10 (Edgy).

From documentation page: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-ubuntu.html
I have done the following:
1. System | Administration | Synaptic Package Manager
2. enter the password
3. menu Settings | Repositories
4. "ubuntu 6.10" tab I have checked the "Community.... (universe)"
5. "Third Party" tab APT line:
deb ftp://ftp.videolan.org/pub/videolan/ubuntu edgy universe
NOTE: I don't know if this source exists. There is no info about this source on VLC page documentation!!!
6. Close button to close window
7. Reload button from tools menu

I got error: Could not download all repository indexes
Inside error there is a message:
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/edgy/Release.gpg: Temporary failure resolving 'pro'
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/ ... -en_US.bz2: Temporary failure resolving 'pro'
ftp://ftp.videolan.org/pub/videolan/ubu ... ackages.gz: Unable to fetch file, server said '/pub/videolan/ubuntu/dists/edgy/universe/binary-i386/Packages.gz: No such file or directory '

So there is no package available. What is the correct package name for Ubuntu Linux 6.10?

BTW, I have tried installing package"dapper" instread of "edgy" and got the same error.

Please help,
Abcuser

My /etc/apt/source.list file looks like this (I have commented all sources beside VLC ftp source - last line in file):

DON'T comment your sources.list completly.

and there is no need to add ftp.videolan.org for edgy because this repo doesn't exist hence the error.

Hi,
I have uncommented all the sources in source.list to original file.

What is correct repo for edby? Why is this not documented on videolan document page?

Thanks,
Abcuser

VLC is in the official multiverse repository of Ubuntu.
So no need to add anything on edgy

Hi,
I have found out how to install VLC media Player on Ubuntu 6.10. It is too easy to be true.
1. menu Applications
2. Add/Remove Application
3. Sound/Video from left window
4. check box at VLC media player
5. Apply button.

All download/installation is done automatically. Too simple. Don't understand VideoLAN Documentation not pointing this out!

Thanks folks,
Abcuser

Because Ubuntu keeps making new releases, and we keep having users of old Ubuntu versions complaining about their old VLC from Ubuntu. We cannot keep up (or we have more interesting thing to do).
