[HTPC] is vlc suited for this ?

Hi
I'm trying to build a HTPC, based on a linux box. The linux operated PC will be connected to the TV, without any keyboard or mouse. I wish to access the files through a WiFi PDA. The PDA will run some kind of remote controller for the VLC server hosted on the linux box.
Am I clear enough ?
My point is to avoid using (and configuring) a remote (no luck with lirc config up to now). Plus the WiFi PDA will make it possible to interact with the HTPC from another room ! And also the file browser will let me do simple file manipulations on the server easily.
From what I understand, you can use VLC to send video over the net. My point here is to control VLC over the net, but display the video stream on the "local" box.
Thanks for your inputs.
