DOH!!! I had the *BACKPORTS* Multiverse selected, and NOT the main Multiverse ..... Make sure you Uncomment the correct repositories

Any suggestions for 64bit Ubuntu Dapper? The videolan repository only has binaries built for 32bit... Can I get do a source installation via apt-get?

Hi,

The current version of vlc is 0.8.6c.

The version compiled in packets is the 0.8.6a. (for ubuntu dapper LTS 6.06)

Is it planned to compile 0.8.6c in packets, and if so, when is it planned?

If you say me to compile it, i won't be able to do that: I 'm new with linux and a lot newbie!!!

i asked the maker of dapper packages to upgrade, but he's in holidays now, maybe in a week or so it can be updated

But I've made the update, and I'm still with 8.0.6a.

The 8.0.6c solves the problem with wmv begining files... and it interests me...

I don't have a lot of time now. I'll retry it later and I 'll give you a feedback.

I upgraded my vlc from 0.8.5 to 6 and the 'a' version does not gives me the video on the web sites I visits. Is there a good chance to get the 'c' version quite soon and the video with the wmv files? Or should I tried to go back to the previous version?

Don't ask me why the sites are using only windows media files.

May be I still think too much as a windozian. My reflex is to update the programs and not the OS. I'm waiting for the next LTS version to update. So up to next spring there is no hope for my VLC with my logic?

I don't know what work it requires but I will be very very pleased

to get the 'c' version.

I did not find any automatic update from dapper to gutsy. So to start playing with the cd business and reloading the full stuff, with the various programs, I will wait for the next LTS version.

i also need vlc 0.8.6c on my Ubuntu 6.06 Server becaue 0.8.6a hungs after a stream was stopped.
my target system is a Dreambox DM7000 and it works well with Ubuntu 7.10 with vlc 0.8.6c and also with the windows version 0.8.6c

so i think, there is a bug in 8.0.6a

Thank you for this. I've been wrestling with video problems since I got a new box about a month ago. Looks like it's all solved.

One note though, it might be a little clearer if you made this first instruction

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.lists

And then said to copy, paste, deb ftp://ftp.videolan.org/pub/videolan/ubuntu dapper universe, at the bottom of it.
