I just installed ubuntu on a friends PC and set him up with VLC and downloaded all the gstreamer codecs just in case. He is trying to play some Divx/Xvid files and they are just showing black screens with audio playing, but sometimes if he puts them in full screen they'll play or if he moves the window around you can then see glimpses of the video.

Also, he is running Beryl as the window manager if that may affect anything.

Anyone have an idea of what could be causing this? thanks

The problem is indeed relied to beryl. Change the video OUtput in preferences=> Advanced => Audio.
