Hi all

I've just moved to linux (ubuntu) and installed vlc. It works fine apart from when I try to fullscreen it, it just maximizes. I have overlay video output checked, could it be something to do with my graphics drivers not being installed correctly? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i too have the same issues.. ive notice that when you load up a movie it opens another window for the movie to be played in .. and when ya double click or select full screen all it does is maximize the view to the screen between the top and bottom bars .. i do not like this i want true full screen .. how can this be overcome .. same deal.. ubuntu edgy 6.10 desktop 64bit version..

Hmmm... after a bit of testing, the problem seems to lie in gnome 2.16 interaction with VLC... Will investigate, but I am not sure of the result.

Yes, I have the same system and AMD64 and have seen the same effects, fullscreen actually just maximises the screen.
It's nice to know that a problem has been recognised, and a fix is being looked at

I've just moved to Ubuntu from Win XP.. I used VLC player virtually all the time in Windows, and it's great to see that it's just as good under Linux as well - definately the best all-round media player that I know of!!!

Is this the problem you guys are talking about(image attached). Sorry take snapshot didn't want to capture the actual video but as you can see, the taskbars and top of the VLC window still show up in full screen mode. I use Ubuntu 6.10 64 bit Edfy Eft, I just switched over to Ubuntu 3 days ago and this is a bit annoying since VLC plays my avi files the best(less jaggy edges) compared to Totem and movie player.

Same Ubuntu version (6.10 on AMD64) and same problem...

My answer for this problem is only the autohide...

So, still no ideas for a fix? I have noticed something and would like a second person to see if they get the same results. I recently downloaded Beryl and got it working and decided to watch a video, at the time I had forgotten about the full screen not working and double clicked and very surprisingly seen it went into full screen with no problems, except that I am having some vsync problems with it(look Here for an example) when I watch fast paced scenes, though this might be a limitation on my graphics card and its 64megs of VRAM. When I am using Emerald for my theme manager I can get full screen but the VSYNC issues, if I use Metacity(Ubuntu's default theme manager) I lose the full screen ability but I do not have any vsync issues.

Can anybody else try this and confirm it?

Hey, I think we have fixed it in 0.8.6-bugfix version and in 0.9.0

How do you apply this patch?

You fetch the Ubuntu sources, apply and rebuild, or you ask the Ubuntu MOTU to package it for you.

Is there a step by step on how to do this? or is it possible to just download the 9.0 version(though I am guessing this is just a beta version) which i don't see on the site anywhere?

Nevermind, while I was checking the bug reporting area I stumbled upon a fix by Lambros Lambrou that said to go into: Settings-->Preferences than go to the Video tab and than to the Output Modules(make sure you clicked on the advanced options checkbox) and choose a different output than default(I chose Xvideo). Than you need to click on the little triangle next to the Output Module and choose the option you changed it to and click on the "Alternate Fullscreen Method" checkbox. Save your changes and open up a move and Viola, you should now have fullscreen in VLC player. If this doesn't work try an alternative video output method.

EDIT: HERES the bug I got the fix from.

Well after using the trick I found in the bug fixes section I still have some problems with full screen quite frequently. Most of the time when I enter into full screen I get the problem shown below where I get a black border around the sides and bottom of the video. I'm using the newest version 0.8.6 and the full screen problem still remains. Is this problem going to be fixed and if so when?
