Installing VLC 8.6.0 on openSuse 10.2

Postby PhilMurphy44 » 24 Dec 2006 12:24

I am having trouble installing the above I keep getting the following exceptions:

#### YaST2 conflicts list - generated 2006-12-24 10:58:43 ####

vlc-0.8.6-0.pm.1.i686[20061220-201959] cannot be installed due to missing dependencies
There are no installable providers of libebml.so.0 for vlc-0.8.6-0.pm.1.i686[20061220-201959]
Conflict Resolution:
( ) do not install vlc
( ) Ignore this requirement just here
xvidcore-1.1.2-2.0.i586 is locked and cannot be uninstalled.
xvid obsoletes xvidcore-1.1.2-2.0.i586. But xvidcore-1.1.2-2.0.i586 cannot be deleted because it is locked.
Conflict Resolution:
( ) unlock xvidcore
( ) unlock all resolvables
( ) Ignore the obsolete xvidcore in xvid

#### YaST2 conflicts list END ###

Can anyone help me:

1. Where do I get libebml.so.0 for vlc-0.8.6-0.pm.1.i686[20061220-201959]? Which repository do I need to link to?

2. Will unlocking xvidcore and installing xvid cause problems with other programs such as Amarok?

Hope some one can help me.

Cheers

Phil

Yeah yast likes to lock packages that you've manually installed or used another program to install it. It should be safe to manually unlock and uninstall xvidcore as amarok does not use it.

Edit: by the way, libebml can be found in the suse 10.2 repos. You have the openSUSE 10.2 version which lacks some of the packages (like libebml) of the retail boxed version. You can find libebml in the 10.2 repos listed on the opensuse.org site.

I had this problem too.
I solved the libebml dependency problem by adding the guru repository to installation sources using yast

see http://en.opensuse.org/YaST_package_repository for details of reccommended repositories

The discussion is about the VLC from the PackMan repository, NOT the one out of the VLC Repository.

by following the instructions at http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-suse.html all dependencies should get solved without problems.
