problem of vlc on fedora 4

Hi, I've installed vlc on fedora 4 using yum install following the instructions on this webpage --> http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-fedora.html
vlc installed fine on fedora, but then some buttons like open file, preference don't work at all, I wonder if I missed anything. Also, I tried playing some music/video files, it is a little bit laggy.

I've also tried with the rpm packages, same thing happened. Any idea? Any pointer is welcome. Thanks.
