Synch issues and question about VLC/gstreamer relationship

Postby zugu » 17 Apr 2006 10:48

I knew from my VLC on Windows experience that VLC was natively supporting a wide range of codecs. So it was my first choice as a multimedia player on Ubuntu Breezy.

However, I am experiencing some synch issues when playing .avi files. I've posted my problem on the Ubuntu forums, but the guys there told me to (re)install various gstreamer plugins, as this could be the problem. This is the thread if you are not clear enough: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=160053

I am wondering what gstreamer has to do with VLC. How could (re)installing gstreamer plugins solve my VLC issue? Does VLC rely on gstreamer for playing some types of media?

And of course, why does my movies have synch issues? I have no xine/gstreamer plugins on my system (other than the default ones in Breezy).[/b]

I think what the guy told you about gstreamer was for totem, not for VLC. Indeed VLC has nothing to do with gstreamer, most of the AVI decoding is handled by the ffmpeg library.

Any thought on how to solve my sync issues?
