Hi,

I had something similar when I tried to get into VLC on Linux. To make a long story short I was trying with FC4 and I tried many different recipes that I found on the web which never worked. Finally I downloaded FC5 and installed it. The next steps were...

1. In the “K desktop environment” using the package manager I installed “Kyum” the GUI front end for “yum”

2. Then going to “rpm.livna.org/configuration.html”, using the Fedora Core 5 button you’ll get to the following command:
“rpm -ivh http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-5.rpm

This command will add the “Livna” repository to yum.

3. Then start “Kyum” then click on the “repositories” tab and make sure the Livna (Livna for fedora core 5 – i386 – Base) is checked.

4. Now click the “actions” tab and then the “find” button

5. In the window type “VLC” and then click “ok”

6. Check the box and then click “install selected” (should be vlc-0.8.4-9.a)

7. after “VLC” is installed click the “find” button again

8. In the window type “libdvdcss” and install it the same way as “VLC”.

Once everything is finished you should find “VLC media player” under “Multimedia” tab on the KDE desktop. With this VLC should work fine. For me it did and I am a newbie at Linux. I know at first it seems a lot of steps, but believe me it is very simple and it is the most user friendly way I have found so far. Hope this will help.

My configuration is the following: Mother board - Asus K8NE, CPU - AMD Athlon 64 2800+, Memory - 1Gbytes (2X512), HD - six WD 250Gbytes, Video - Asus 7100 (nvdia)
