vlc build problem

Hi All,
I am trying to using VLC in RHEL3.
VLC installed on /usr/local/vlc-0.8.4.
when i run VLC (say ./configure), following error message is occured....
configure: error: Missing header file ffmpeg/avcodec.h.
when i export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/home/you/ffmpeg/
Then run ./configure for VLC.
same error message is occured......
anybody help me....
is it possible what is the actual problem? and how can i solved it??????
what is the purpose of "libavcodec.pc" file..?
