Is VLC the right thing for me?

ok I'm a newbie

On my debian server i have some mp3-files that i want to be able to play on other machines without downloading the file. Can i do this with vlc? How?

You can use samba (which uses SMB, the same thing as Windows Network Neighbourhood). That's probably the easiest soultion to set up (KDE has some good samba support).

Butler suggested NFS, which is actually mounting a (shared) hard drive as if it was one of your own (perhaps a bit of overkill in this situation, but it would be a seamless solution).

You might also want to keep an eye on SongBird, an opensource rival to iTunes. At the moment it's Windows only, but i think it's only a matter of time until we get a linux clone. That also uses some of the VLC source code, I believe.
