VLC shows black window but appears to be playing video

Platform : Ubuntu 22.10
VLC version : 3.0.17.4-5 (installed using 'apt', not 'snap')
Symptoms :
VLC appears to be playing a video, but shows a black screen. The timer bar moves across the screen. I can find no error messages anywhere.

If I take a snapshot, it works just fine.

Videos were created by me, not downloaded, using a) guvcview 2.0.8 (mkv) and b) webcamoid 9.0.0 (webm).

I fairly recently updated from Ubuntu 22.04 to Ubuntu 22.10, and VLC worked fine before the upgrade, and it may have worked after the upgrade, but I'm not sure.

Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks

The problem I have appears to be related to the Qt interface only. The variants, svlc (skins), nvlc (ncurses), and cvlc (command line) interfaces work fine. These variants are just shell wrappers to the vlc command providing the appropriate -I (interface) parameter.

I'm in the same boat. Thanks for reporting this. This happens with all sorts of video: I am experiencing this when doing DVD and BluRay playback etc. I was going crazy for a while, thinking that I may have done something to screw it up. Interestingly, rendering on a different sink (i.e. Chromecast) works just fine!

Interestingly, the QT community reports this bug as having been fixed some time ago (https://bugreports.qt.io/browse/QTBUG-108407), though that is not my experience so far. Am I doing anything wrong?

Only you can tell that. Check that your Qt version includes the fix
