VLC crashes when using VPN and clicking on renderer

When clicking on renderer in order to send VLC output to my TV in the living room through Chromecast, everything works when not using a VPN. However, VLC freezes if I am using a VPN, and I must log out and log back into the operating system to kill the program. This problem occurs when running VLC on either my Linux Mint or my Windows partition, so the problem is either native to VLC or to Chromecast. I believe the problem is related to the new virtual network address assigned by VPN, which is different than the one normally assigned by my ISP. I would like to keep using VPN and still be able to render VLC output to my TV via chromecast. Is there any workaround for the problem?

You can either set the chromecasting manually from the CLI, or you need to update whatever library is crashing - my bet is on libmicrodns.
