Global Hotkeys don't work in Linux Mint 19.3 (Ubuntu 18.04)

Hey guys! Has anybody gotten the global hotkeys in VLC to work?

I set Play/Pause to Super+5, Play to Ctrl+Alt+4 and Pause to Ctrl+Alt+6. However, they don't work at all, regardless of whether the app is in focus or not.

I know I can set a play/pause hotkey in Linux Mint's Keyboard Settings app, but that gets hijacked by other MPRIS-supporting apps if they're running at the same time as VLC, e.g., Opera when I have a YouTube video open.

I completely removed VLC from my system (apt remove --purge), deleted all config folders I could find on my computer, re-installed and tried again.

Still no luck. Is there a way to get the global hotkeys to work?

Restart the app after changing the hotkeys. If it still fails, file a bug with logs and exact steps.
