What happened the old VLC GUI interface?

Postby BillDad » 25 Dec 2018 09:13

:(
Hello. I have used VLC for many years. It is the best media player around.I would invoke VLC, and upon invocation it would present me with a sophisticated GUI interface, including pull-down menus, and a variety of ways to customize the interface.

Now, I just recompiled VLC from Eric Hameleers (Slackware14.2)Now, I just recompiled VLC from Eric Hameleers (Slackware 14.2) vlc.SlackBuild, the same as I did before. But now when I call up VLC, I just get a plain command line interface. I'm sure it has a lot of commands, but I miss the old full screen GUI interface.

Please clue me in on how to restore VLC to use that old GUI interface. If not, I will have to use a different media player (they are all inferior to VLC), or resort to (ugh!) Windows, where I haven't upgraded VLC, and it still has the familiar and friendly GUI interface I need.

Signed,

Frustrated

I am having the same problem.

What doesn't make sense is that previous SlackBuilds for vlc were definitively without any such problems.

I've tried the command-line interface, and it does work, but the gui was so much easier to deal with, I just can't imagine why we are expected to cotton to the command-line.

I am using Slackware 14.2 (up to date), 32-bit, with xfce-4 as the window manager. It runs in a no-frills Dell Optiplex 380. which, however, was the same machine on which I ran the old, gui-interface vlc.

Thanks in advance for your support.

The GUI interface has been the same for a decade. If it does not start, then you probably have a packaging bug or installation problem.

Hi,

Try installing Qt and if it doesn't work, be sure to use --enable-qt when launching the configure (in your package), so that you have an error if Qt is not found.

I was playing with VLC skins downloaded from gnome-look.org. And now,I think, My VLC is bricked. It shows this error message on terminal:

[0x1b15f08] skins2 interface error: no skins found : exiting.

I don't wanna reinstall it either.

~$ vlc

VLC media player 2.0.8 Twoflower (revision 2.0.8a-0-g68cf50b)

Hi, your VLC version is very old, you should consider upgrading.

Nevertheless, you can reset this setting in the ~/.config/vlc/vlcrc file. Either delete this file (to recreate it) or change this part (this is the default installation):

Code: Select all

[skins2] # Skinnable Interface # Skin to use (string) skins2-last=share/skins2/default.vlt # Config of last used skin (string) #skins2-config= # Enable transparency effects (boolean) #skins2-transparency=0 # Use a skinned playlist (boolean) #skinned-playlist=1 # Display video in a skinned window if any (boolean) #skinned-video=1
