The only supported VLC version on any desktop system is the latest one (as of today, 3.0.4).

Thanks Remi for you response, but based on it, I phrased my question improperly. I was trying to determine which 'flavor' of LINUX would work best. The downloads offer 10 LINUXes: Debian, Ubuntu, Mint ,etc. Is any one of the 10 better for KALI LINUX?

You can build it https://github.com/videolan/vlc.
On kali by default you use the root user so when you run ./configure use the flag

Code: Select all

--enable-run-as-root
On debian 9 I did it for the same reason (to run it as root) but I can use only the cli, normally you should have everything https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=147154.
