VLC 3.0.3 does not inhibit screensaver while playing

I use Ubuntu 18.04. I configured VLC to inhibit screensaver while playing. This works fine initially, but after a few suspend / resume cycles it breaks: after watching a video in fullscreen for 5 minutes the screen goes blank. Any help to debug this issue is appreciated.

What distribution / desktop environment are you using ?
