VLC 3.0.2 doesn't remember last directory

Hello,
I am on Debian stable (9.4) amd64, VLC 3.0.2-0-gd7b653cf14.
This version no longer remembers the last opened folder: when I do Ctrl-f it always shows my home, not the previous location that I navigated to in the previous Ctrl-f. It seems to be similar to
https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=143366
https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=143185
but these topics relate to Windows and as far as I understand to file opening (Ctrl-o). Based on the comments there, these issues should already be solved in the revision that I am having problem with. Indeed if I do Ctrl-o, the location is remembered. But not for Ctrl-f.
Is there a setting for this somewhere? Should I post it as a bug report?
Best regards,
Antoni
