"Unidentified codec" after upgrading to VLC 3.0.2-1+b1

So, I wanted the infamous play/pause on middle button functionality ...
Before installing the plugin, however, I updated.
Now I get "Unidentified codec: VLC could not identify the audio or video codec".
I don't see how updating should in any way lead to this error.
I already deleted the plugin with:

For reasons regarding the damn NVIDIA driver I can't upgrade the linux kernel, but I'm using software from the Debian sid repositories anyway and with success.uname -a
